The weekend workshop is packed with exciting ways of printing your own unique fabrics using a combination of Collagraph and Drypoint printing, which you will then collage and combine with free motion machine or hand embroidery to create a beautiful fine art textile.
Collagraph and Drypoint Printing are techniques that are normally used to print onto paper and after doing a workshop at the Glasgow Print Studio many years ago, I was intrigued with the idea of adapting the processes for printing onto fabric.
I ran a workshop last year that touched on the subject but this year’s Summer School and Weekend Workshop will explore the techniques in more depth and teach you how to create the best results which I learned from lots of experimenting.
Collagraph is a versatile printmaking technique where a printing plate is made by collaging textured materials onto a board. This is then inked up and passed through a press. It’s a great way of recycling materials such as lace, foil, masking tape, yarn and net bags to create beautiful printed fabrics.
Drypoint is a perfect way to create shape and form. The technique involves scratching an image onto a paper drypoint plate using a scalpel knife to create a ‘burr’ which collects the ink and prints onto the fabric when put through a press.
Then armed with a bundle of printed fabrics you will learn how to mix up textures through collaging your fabrics to create depth of colour and pattern, before adding embellishment using free motion machine and hand embroidery.
If you don’t have a sewing machine you can either try out my machine or work with hand embroidery to add embellishment. Sewing machine must be PAT tested.
The weekend is full of fun and playful creativity and is suitable for all levels including beginners.
