RSPB – COP26 ‘OUR DEAR GREEN FUTURE’ Textile Banner.
In 2021 I was commissioned by the RSPB to create a banner for display at COP26, highlighting Glasgow’s perspective on climate change. This work took place through lock down and all associated workshops were delivered digitally.
With the Climate Change Conference (COP26) taking place in Glasgow in November 2021 the aim of the banner was to create a strong piece of work that highlighted and expressed the views of Glasgow communities on the issue of Climate Change and how it has impacted on the biodiversity of the city
I worked closely with the RSPB and local residents and community groups, who contributed hand-embroidered patches illustrating local species threatened by the climate crisis. The response was incredible, resulting in a beautiful collection of community contributions.
The main design reinterprets the symbolism of the Glasgow crest through the lens of environmental preservation:
– The Bell: Now tolls as a warning of global warming.
– The Tree: Symbolizes the vital role of trees in our environment.
– The Bird: Represents the loss of species and threats to wildlife.
– The Fish: Symbolizes the state of our waterways and rising sea temperatures.
In keeping with the project’s values, the banner was made entirely from recycled materials, including donated clothing and curtains. Following its debut at COP26, the banner has been displayed in various galleries across Glasgow to continue raising awareness.
