Christian Small Project
Christian Small was an artist who lived in West Linton from 1953 till her death in 2016 and in 2018 her family and friends published a book, Inside & Out – The Art of Christian Small, with support from The Alice Hamilton Trust.
The proceeds from the book sales were then used to fund a legacy art project at West Linton Primary School.
As the chosen artists my aim for the project was to open the children’s eyes and minds to the creative possibilities that exist on their own doorstep, to help them develop an understanding of how and why Christian was so inspired by her local surroundings.
The children worked outside responding directly to the local environment using a selection of mixed media. We looked at an applique textile by Christian and used this and the children’s drawings as our inspiration for a large textile banner. The children experimented with various printed and felted textile techniques then helped hand embroider the finishing touches.
